Walking on the streets of my hometown and that of Mangalore city is different. My hometown has fancies, hotels, bakeries and general stores. A chocolate or a bottle of water can be brought from any of these places. Mangalore is a bit different because you can find specializations. For example, some stores specialize in shoes, while clinics focus solely on skincare, reflecting a locality’s ability to meet specific needs efficiently.Skill gap in India might be a problem we are facing.
How many of us are aware of the term skill gap?
A Skill gap in India is the difference between the skills that an employer needs and the skills that employees have. This mismatch can make it difficult for employers to fill open positions. For example, a company hires a software developer for expertise in one programming language but expects them to learn a new one for business needs. The India Employment Report 2024 by the ILO and IHD states that youths made up nearly 83% of India’s unemployed population in 2022. Those with secondary-level or higher education accounted for 65.7% of this population. In India we believe that the scarcity of employment opportunities is due to a lack of jobs. That is not the only case. In fact, several industries are grappling with a shortage of skilled labor. In June, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported an inability to fill 80,000 positions due to lack of qualified candidates, highlighting a broader skills gap in the IT industry. This serves as an example.
A survey by CEA V. Anantha Nageswaran reveals that only 51.25% of young graduates are employable. He cites EPFO and job index data, stressing the need to improve job quality, not just creation.
Where are we going wrong and what to do?

As the above image says on one side, we have several job opportunities and on the other side unemployable people. This is due to humongous skill mismatch, a resultant of wrong educational choices. When I think about career paths young people need to pursue the idea of specialization resonates. We need enough people to work in all sectors. It is already time we stop sending our children to random courses because of peer groups, parental ambitions and social stigmas. Instead, isn’t it way better to align our children’s passions and career choices so that we elude enormous wastage of time, money and effort? If a person loves swimming, should we not think of swimming not only as passion but also as a means for living? Career recommendations for sportsperson includes career as physical trainer, career in sports administrative services and in sports physiotherapy. Hence, the best way to go is to find what individuals really love and find jobs that align with their passion.
